I saw a point guard last weekend who would take it out and hold it to call a play, then put it back in while dribbling and carry on. Then I thought of the recent encouragement from NFHS over mouth guards, and I thought to myself, “You know, self, there’s a lot of talking in basketball and if we force mouth guard use, we’re either going to have a lot of dripping saliva when they are removed for speech, or we’re going to have a lot of players running around the court who sound like zombies in dental chairs.” Count me in the group that would prefer not to mandate this. I especially don't want to take a dentistry class to see if a mouth guard is legal with all these requirements let alone inspect one. Or are they about to sign a deal with a mouth guard maker to get nfhs approval stamps on the guards.
