Legal apparel or not legal NFHS?

Medical Bracelet somehow was deemed so significant nationwide that the NFHS felt it merited its own Point of Emphasis this season. This is what's printed on page 70 the new rules book:

2. Medical Bracelet: It is the coach's role to know what the rules allowances and restrictions are, and insure the players are properly informed. The head coach, by rules, must not permit a team member to participate while wearing an illegal uniform, illegal equipment, illegal apparel, etc. It is, therefore, incumbent on the coach to be sure the rules and restrictions have been reviewed by the team, including, and especially, allowable accessories.

Yes, it is also the officials' role to monitor the players, the uniforms and accessories. However, the head coach must be very much involved. The officials should not be placed in a position where they are often viewed as "being picky/searching for" illegal uniform and apparel items.

By rule, the medical alert medal or bracelet must be taped to the person securely while the medical information is visible. Regardless of the type of material the medical alert bracelet is of, it must be taped to the arm securely with the medical information visible. 3-5-7

Apparently a response to the new silicone type medical alert bracelets (silicone bracelets that are so popular in today's culture with everybody wanting to share their "cause" with everybody else).

This isn't your father's medical alert bracelet, a metal chain with metal tag with engraved medical information.

Regarding the new silicone type medical alert bracelets, many officials probably thought that being made from a soft material and not likely to fall off that these need not be taped.

A reminder that there is a slight rule difference between a medical medal and a religious medal.

While both must be taped, the medical medal may be visible (for obvious reasons), while the religious medal must be worn under the uniform.

3-5-7: Jewelry is prohibited. Religious and medical-alert medals are
not considered jewelry. A religious medal must be taped and worn under
the uniform. A medical-alert medal must be taped and may be visible.

Falling off was never the issue.

It is about someone else getting a finger caught in it.

Which is certainly a possibility with a silicone medical alert bracelet (or the old fashioned metal ones).

Equipment falling onto the floor is always an issue, eyeglasses (pet peeve, get a strap), pony tail holders, headbands, mouth guards, etc. Many officials will stop the game as soon as possible when any equipment items end up on the floor.

Still, the issue with medic alert bracelets is not falling off. They're designed to not fall off. Being less than almost impossible to come off would effectively defeat their purpose.

I was just trying to rationalize why a few officials might allow silicone type medical alert bracelets with no tape.

The NFHS, and Camron Rust, have put the kibosh on that idea.
