Good feeling all under

I was walking down the sidewalk next to a construction site near my office when a large 6' 8" 350 lb. construction worker steps out and says, "Hey I've seen you before, you refereed my son's basketball games. I just want to thank you for the good job you do." I used to have a saying, "If you believe them when they tell you that you are good, you need to believe them when they tell you, you're bad". Somehow, this time it does not apply.

I'll bet his son's team won every game you worked.

Yes, sometimes they are genuine in the compliment. You can usually believe people who compliment you when they have lost.

There are a few coaches I work with whose opinions about my work I generally value. All of those coaches are mild-mannered and don't bother officials very much during the game. If they do, there's a good chance they have a valid point.

But plenty of coaches I work with will laud you when they win and curse you when they lose. Which is why coaches ratings as a component of advancement have never made sense to me.
