Orange is one syllable, at least the way I say it.

It will be a cold day in hell before I say "purple", however.

When I used to officiate H.S. futbol, we used the actual color because futbol officials were smarter that basketball officials and could pronounce multi-sylable words, .

The NBA trained referees in my house tell me they have no compunction against using purple or orange. It is a matter of credibility and consistency within their circle.
