I used to work in the same board as Al when I was in DC almost 20 years ago. I can't believe he's still at it. Good for him. He's a good guy.

He loves sending quizzes. One of my college conferences gets at least two a month from him

Is the answer to Q7 in the first quiz ambiguous? Does it depend upon whether "toss" means "caught and threw" or means "batted without gaining control"?

Yes, but "toss" generally means the former; "bat" generally means the latter.

Thanks. (That's what I thought, but got my As and Bs confused and thought the answer was the opposite of what it was . . . as a non-ref can I be pleased that was my only mistake?)

I'm a soccer ref. I reffed catholic school 5-8th grade BB with no training in my youth -- well, other than reading the book (which actually made me better trained than many in that pool . . .). Oh, and I reffed one of my daughter's 6th grade games a few years ago when there wasn't one. I started lurking on here periodically, well on a predecessor site, after winning an argument about a rule in a pickup game years ago, but then wondering if I was right -- I wasn't. Now I've lurked more as I was coaching my son in jr high and now he is playing in HS . . . and maybe when he's done I'll get into doing BB for real. Less running than soccer.

Had a play yesterday that made me think of toss vs. bat.

2-person crew. A1 attempts a 3pt shot in front of the tableside trail. The shot is an airball. It lands inbounds in front of the lead and bounces over the endline. A2 jumps from inbounds in an attempt to save it and bats OR catches/throws the ball over his shoulder. It bounces into the backcourt where A3 is first to touch.

Say the trail official isn't sure whether A2 possessed it or not. Hopefully the lead can help right away. but if not...

Should we call the violation, THEN go check with the lead? And if Lead says it was a bat, change it to inadvertent whistle?

I'd say it's nearly impossible to bat the ball that far.
