Had a play yesterday that made me think of toss vs. bat.

2-person crew. A1 attempts a 3pt shot in front of the tableside trail. The shot is an airball. It lands inbounds in front of the lead and bounces over the endline. A2 jumps from inbounds in an attempt to save it and bats OR catches/throws the ball over his shoulder. It bounces into the backcourt where A3 is first to touch.

Say the trail official isn't sure whether A2 possessed it or not. Hopefully the lead can help right away. but if not...

Should we call the violation, THEN go check with the lead? And if Lead says it was a bat, change it to inadvertent whistle?
