Delay?

I have had two games where a team calls a time out and then the player with the ball takes a practice shot instead of giving the ball to the official.

I don't see that as a delay in the rule book - how do you handle?

Retrieve the ball at an appropriate time...maybe even make the shooter go get the ball.

And no this is not a delay of game warning.

if you want to penalize, it's a T.

There are many more appropriate game management steps that can be taken first.

I T'd it once in a military intramural game. I asked for the ball and the player turned around and shot the ball instead. It was my early years.

The game isnt being delayed here, not one of the delay possibilities . This would be a behavior T if you think its needed.

Because there are only four options for a dog warning in the rules, and this isn't one of them. As Bob noted, the only rule remedy is a T, but it's for failing to hand the ball directly to the nearest official.

I've seen it called by a partner once in a JV game, and I think it was a good call under the circumstance. Timeout called, partner standing right next the player asked him for the ball, player looked at him and launched a shot from 20 feet away. Partner then advised the player to go get the ball, he turned and walked to his bench.

T.

Well the game is being delayed, but you are correct this is not one of the listed DOG warnings we can give.

How is the game being delayed during a time out?

Not specifically after a timeout as in the OP, but in the case where an official makes a call and the player shoots the ball. The game is being delayed slightly but it's not one of the DOG warnings we can give.

A warning to a team for delay is an administrative procedure by an official
which is recorded in the scorebook by the scorer and reported to the coach:
ART. 1 For throw-in plane violations, as in 9-2-10, 10-1-5c.
ART. 2 For huddle by either team and contact with the free thrower, as in
10-1-5d.
ART. 3 For interfering with the ball following a goal as in 10-1-5e.
ART. 4 For failure to have the court ready for play following any time-out
as in 10-1-5f.

A player shall not: Delay the game by acts such as:
b. Failing when in possession, to immediately pass the ball to the nearer
official when a whistle blows.

And really this is only an issue in an empty gym. Most of the time, regardless of what the players do with the ball, it ends up in the bleachers with some kid more than happy to throw it to us when we're ready.
