If it was an older coach, he may remember the dotted line that was the lane semi-circle that joined the said line that is now the semi-circle the players cannot enter. Virginia even got a memo for VHSL that this was NOT the new rule. DUH

I had a veteran referee say that to me when the rule came out. As the younger guy I held my tongue, even though I knew he was wrong.

These dotted semicircle lines in the lane are vestiges from when we had three jump ball circles. That's right, we had three different jump ball circles and a lot more than just one jump ball in a game. We had literally a dozen, maybe a few more, jump balls in girls freshman games back then. Thank God for the invention of the alternating possession arrow.
