You make the call

First half. Boys varsity. NFHS rules.

A1 is shooting two free throws after being fouled. Attempts are being made at the end of the floor in front of B's bench. B1 goes over by the bench and someone hands him a water bottle. After the second FT, which A1 makes, B2 grabs the ball and takes it OOB for the throw-in. He throws it to B1, who catches it 1 handed while still holding the water bottle. B1 tosses the water bottle to one of his teammates on the bench.

What call, if any, do you make?

Please cite rule and/or casebook references to support your answer. I'm sure we will be discussing this play at our local association meeting on Monday night as it occurred during a game I was working earlier today.

Pretty sure there's no rule against this.

I suppose since this isn't a time out and there wasn't water on the floor.........this couldn't be a DOG warning. Guess it would just be something to get direction from assn or state office. Let us know what your assn thinks, be interesting to know

I would be laughing as I transitioned up the court. And not calling anything.

I agree. It is only an infraction of the rules if I am not offered my own bottle of ice cold water.

Whack. Assess a technical foul for bringing an object onto the court during game play which could pose a safety hazard. This falls under unsporting behavior.
Players can't just grab anything they wish from someone on the bench during the game. Some items just aren't appropriate for the court and can't be permissible. To make the point more clearly, substitute a pair of scissors for the water bottle and say that the player desires cut tape off his wrist because it is wrapped too tightly.

You don't like employing judgment, do you? Seems like anything unusual you observe gets binned under unsporting behavior.

At worst I'm telling the coach, "hey that was kinda funny but next time please have your bench get the water bottle back before the ball is live."

The problem is that this isn't a pair of scissors.

I've said this in another forum; I'll say it here.

If you have to stretch a rule that thin in order to make a call that will get you in the papers, it's probably best not to make that call.

Calling this unsporting is dumbing down the definition of unsporting to the point where it could literally apply to anything.

Allow me to apply some reductio ad absurdum to your argument. Substitute a gun for the scissors. And you are only assessing a technical foul and allowing the player to remain in the game?!??!!?

Back to reality. Substitute towel for gun.
