Players can't just grab anything they wish from someone on the bench during the game. Some items just aren't appropriate for the court and can't be permissible. The problem is that this isn't a pair of scissors.
I've said this in another forum; I'll say it here.
If you have to stretch a rule that thin in order to make a call that will get you in the papers, it's probably best not to make that call.
Calling this unsporting is dumbing down the definition of unsporting to the point where it could literally apply to anything.
