Number of Team Members Allowed

What is the most team members you normally see? Most of the scorebooks I've seen only have room for 15 players per team. Most of my games have 12 or less, but occasionally a team may have more than that on the bench, even though you know some of them won't be playing.

Our state tournament only allows 12 players on the roster. I believe there is an allowance for some alternates too in case of injury between the end of the region tournament and the start of the state tournament.

What do most of you see?

16 or 17 is not unusual. But seeing around 12 is not way off either at many schools for the boys teams.

We'll see anywhere from 9 to 17 on the varsity bench. Typical is about 12.

Postseason here has a limit of 15.

I notice it a few times a year and at a glance when there are 17 players I recognize a few of them from JV. Never see them play, so, meh.

Nope. There are many times where they have to "split" a section to get two players in the same column in the score-book. I see that often. There is no regular season limit but there is one for the post season. I think many of the kids are lower level players that a coach wants to use every now and then.

Well, 17 is odd, but it's not unusual.

I had 20 in an NCAAW game recently.

I had 26 on my junior high basketball team. They only cut one player. Imagine what that book looked like. Last year that happened at that school.

I'll raise you two. 22 on an NCAAW roster in November. Team was in NYC from Ohio and brought its JV squad along. The players were all in uniform so all of them went into the scorebook.

By the NFHS rulebook, the limit is 31, but that's only because of the numbering requirements.

It's 36 isn't it? 0,1,2,3,4,5 are possible as the first or second digit gives 36 combinations.

I've reffed twice this season for a team that was using crazy numbers (73, 38, etc.) These were sub varsity games. Anything I can do in that case?

Get really good, really fast so you don't have to ref those games anymore.
