Goaltending

Has this been discussed at all? It looks like the definition of goaltending has reverted to the "old" rule, which included being outside the imaginary cylinder as one of the requirements. It's not worded as clearly as it used to be, but the phrase "is not touching the basket cylinder" has been added to last year's definition.

In my old books, it was stated much more clearly that the ball could not be touching the "imaginary cylinder that has the basket ring as its base"; but it seems like the intention is to go back to the old rule.

Thoughts? I know it only matters in one very specific circumstance, but it does matter.

Are you talking about Basket Interference or Goaltending?

I just looked at the 13-14 Rules book and the 14-15 Rules book and the wording is practically the same in GT. The only thing they did was change a slight grammar change taking out "and" and putting a comma between "basket ring level, has...." instead of "basket ring level and has...."

I see absolutely no wording changes in the BI definition.

I could be wrong, but how old of a rulebook are you looking back into?

Peace

Jeff,

I'm talking about the 15-16 book. (I just got mine today, because my New Applicants' class starts Wednesday.) The definition of Goaltending now reads:

"Goaltending occurs when a player touches the ball during a field-goal try or tap while the ball is in its downward flight entirely above the basket ring level, has the possibility of entering the basket in flight and is not touching the basket cylinder or a player touches the ball outside the cylinder during a free-throw attempt".

The parts highlighted in red have been changed from the 14-15 book. Obviously changing "it" to "the ball" or adding a comma are unimportant. But I like that they've added the part about not touching the basket cylinder.

Well, that answers my question in the other thread . . .

Yes. It does matter on a specific test question.

I don't have my 2015-16 NFHS Basketball Rulebook yet, but it looks like the NFHS has finally taken my suggested change seriously:

If you have a situation where a player touches the ball during a field-goal try, while it is in its downward flight, entirely above the basket ring level, while the ball is in the cylinder, and the ball has the possibility of entering the basket in flight, then, by strict interpretation of the written definition, the official can call either a goaltending violation, or a basket interference violation.

The definition of goaltending did contain the requirement of the ball having to be outside of the imaginary cylinder through the 2003-04 season. For some unknown reason the rule was edited, without comment, or announcement, for the 2004-05 season and that part of the definition was dropped.

2002-03 NFHS 4-22: Goaltending occurs when a player touches the ball during a field-goal try or tap while: a) the ball is in downward flight. b) the entire ball is above the level of the basket ring. c) the ball has the possibility of entering the basket in flight. d) the ball is not touching an imaginary cylinder which has the basket ring as its lower base.

2012-13 NFHS 4-22: Goaltending occurs when a player touches the ball during a field-goal try or tap while it is in its downward flight entirely above the basket ring level and has the possibility of entering the basket in flight.

This omission (outside the cylinder) needs to be corrected.

You're welcome.
