NFHS appeal

Does anyone remember what year they put the appeal back in the NFHS baseball?

If you go thru the interps (available on the sticky thread) it appears there was a major change regarding appeals in 2001.

This sounds about right...getting rid of the accidental appeal and including the dead ball appeal. Nice work.

In FED, you could have a dead ball appeal from a player or coach that required no action on the part of the defense other than a verbal appeal. "Mr. Umpire, sir, we claim that the runner from 2nd missed 3rd."

Thems were the good ole days!

That's the current NFHS rule.

I don't work as many games under FED rules as I used to, but I've still never had a verbal appeal. Hell, most of the time they want to do the whole get on the rubber/put the ball in play/step off and throw to the base routine even if the ball was live the entire time.

The gymnastics are more in my hood as well.

Then I tell them that they don't need to do that, they try and debate it w/ me.

Shake my head man.

If I know an appeal is coming, I'll call time if I can without making it obvious...

In the 'olden' days we could call a runner out for missing a base without an appeal.

And thank goodness those days are gone.

The defense has responsibilities, too.

I knew umpires, even in those days, who would ignore base running errors unless they heard someone grumbling or talking about them.

Probably a very appropriate approach.

I see several misses a year that never get appealed. One of the best rule changes I can remember from the FED.
