Tschida told Maddon he could check one opposing player in response (that's a weird rule), so the umps patted down Washington's Ryan Mattheus but found nothing untoward.
What the hell is that? Tit for tat?

Anyone find that in MLBUM?

My guess is that's not an accurate report. Maddon probably accused Mattheus of something in retaliation, forcing the umpires' hands.

Tschida probably (as I would have) "allowed" one check of an opposing player to pacify Maddon and to prevent a continued parade to the mound.

Solid game management.

Nope....

This was a pissing match. Confirmed by both managers in post game interviews.

I don't need something in black and white to tell me how to handle it.

You are welcome to handle these situations any way you feel comfortable. I know how I would have handled it, and it would not be trying to keep things "even" between the teams.

What was being kept "even"?

Tim knew what was going on. He handled it fine.

I am not criticizing Tim in the least. However, that is not how I would have handled the situation.

How would you have handled it differently?

I would not have done this. Eject, move on.

You may have done this at whatever level you work. You would not
have if you were a MLB umpire. You would have done exactly what Tschida did, the prescribed manner in which this is handled.

Ejection is not the correct way to handle this pi$$ing contest. You check the other team's glove once and that's it. If the coach wants every relief pitcher's glove checked, then, it ain't happening!
