Talking !st Batter interference in a long time

15U and I am by myself. Do to shortages only one UMP assigned.

I'm hustling and hearing no complaints.

I have a runner on 1st. The count is 1 and 1 on the batter. As F1 starts his delivery, R1 breaks for 2nd. As the ball crosses the plate the batter swung and stepped in front of the plate into the pathway of F2 as he is throwing. I watch and sure enough there is contact on the follow through of the throw. The throw goes wide and F4 was good and made a diving catch. I call time rule the runner out for batter interference.

The HC who is in the 3rd base box requests time and an explanation as to why I called his runner out. I explain that there was batter interference and since there were less that two outs the runner was out on the interference call.

The coach asked was there contact and I stated yes. HE said " So that's why you ruled interference." I informed him that it helped but the batter leaving the box caused the interference. He got that "deer in the headlights" look and went back to 3rd.

What ruleset? Any I know, and the coach has an argument:

OBR 6.06(c): A batter is out for illegal action when (c) He interferes with the catcher’s fielding or throwing by stepping out of the batter’s box or making any other movement that hinders the catcher’s play at home base. Rule 6.06(c) Comment: If the batter interferes with the catcher, the plate umpire shall call “interference.” The batter is out and the ball dead. No player may advance on such interference (offensive interference) and all runners must return to the last base that was, in the judgment of the umpire, legally touched at the time of the interference.

Fed 7-3-5: A batter shall not interfere with the catcher's fielding or throwing by: (a) leaning over home plate, (b) stepping out of the batter's box. PENALTY: When there are two outs, the batter is out.... When an attempt to put out a runner at any other base [other than home plate] is unsuccessful, the batter is out and all runners must return to bases occupied at the time of the pitch.

Right. The batter is out for BI. This makes sense, since it's his infraction. The exception is R3 stealing with 2 outs.

I don't know why that exception sticks in people's minds and makes them call the runner out. I had to fix this on the field once with a league UIC behind the plate, and had to bet him that I was right in order to get it fixed.

I screwed the pooch! Like I said I have not had this happen in a long time.

The next time I see that coach I will have to explain how I messed up!

I don't understand what you are referencing.

I had to do a game and screwed up. So if that is patting yourself on the back then I am a lost for words.

From the way this thread sounds, you didn't know you'd made a mistake until you posted this here and were corrected.

Your Arrogance

In all of your posts (I'm hustling and hearing no complaints) you always reference the things you did right bragging about how of an good umpire are.

Lets see in other post beating partners up bragging about the pre game meeting.

Baseball novice here: Am I right in inferring from this thread that the runner should have been returned to 1B and the batter declared out?
