If you have a HBP where you judge that the player "permitted the pitch to hit him" (new FED language) or that he "made no attempt to avoid" the pitch (OBR), the proper mechanic is:

"TIME! That's a (pick one: ball or strike)! Stay right there, batter!"

Unless of course it's strike 3 or ball 4, in which case we leave off the last part.

It's important to call time so that other runners not forced do not advance on the play.
