Video: Could anything else have been done?

YouTube - Baseball bloopers Andre Dawson goes crazy Cincinnati at Chicago Cubs 1991.mp4

Andre Dawson flips out in 1991.

I have four questions:
1) Where was Jim Essian (interim manager) in the first 25 seconds of that argument?
2) Was West too slow to eject?
3) Should the other two younger umpires (I think Winters and Hallion) have come over sooner to help Gregg and West?
4) What would you do if someone did this in one of your games?

Outside of Pro ball

1) Who cares from an umpire's standpoint.
2) Yes, he was slow. As soon as the batter is throwing his hands up and pointing at the plate, WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH!!!
3) They did as they always do. As long as it is One on One and hasn't gotten out of control, they let West do his job. Once Dawson left and Rigg stepped in, it was still One on One and Gregg was handling Dawson. Once he started with the bats, then they stepped in to help if possible.

For amateur ball, BU(s) should be there immediately since there is no telling what an idiot amateur player will do.

4) As soon as the bats come flying, that ball game is over for me. I am leaving mainly for my safety b/c I don't know what else or where else that idiot might be throwing things.

Remember, this is pro ball. They handle and tolerate things differently than we do with amateur players.

Wow! That's not a strike at any level. Not close, really. We don't know how many strikes West called that night that were that glaringly bad, so we don't know what the buildup was, but if that call's an indication, someone going berserk was at least understandable.

The Hawk was one of the classiest players in the game. This is obviously one of his low points.

1) Yeah, who cares?
2) The second he waved his arms or pointed, he must go. So yes, the EJ was too slow.
3) Hell, no.
4) Every situation's different. I stay and take whatever comes, but not everyone's the same.

Yeah Finn...I don't care about the manager either.

A.D. was initially allowed to demonstrate his opinion of the strike zone. After that West seemed to need something more to get him. Who knows why it went down the way it did.

Here's the aftermath on the 9'oclock news, including Dawson's post game interview. Interesting stuff here regarding player perception. I think it is useful when considering our own professional style. Also...a little humorous in how Andre considers his own actions. Note - there were three EJ's in that game...

YouTube - Chicago Cubs, 1991: Andre Dawson Errupts

Andre mentions the "Show incident" during the interview...here it is for those who don't remember:

YouTube - Andre Dawson Eric Show Beanball

Ahhh the good old days. The professional game continues to lose its verve.

haha those actually went out of style before I even started umpiring. Those went out in mid to late 90's?

That's about when, yes. I wore them for a couple of seasons before we switched to the top of the line dazzle navy blue polo!

At least you can say you were wearing football knickers the last few seasons before they became obsolete.
