Basic Question #2

NFHS Rules

R1 and R3 and no outs.

2 balls 2 strikes on batter.

On the next pitch the batter swings and misses and falls across home plate where he contacts F2.

F2's throw in:

a) retires the R1 in his attempt and in,

b) the ball sails into centerfield.

On both plays R3 scores.

What do you have?

Tim,

a) R1 is out, R3 scores, the BI is disregarded.

b) the Batter is out, R3 & R1 return.

A. R1=Out(Tag), R3=Score, B/R=Out(K), BI=Ignored

B. R1=Out (BI), R3=Back to 3B, B/R=Out(K), BI=Enforced

Cool

bobby,

I stand corrected - I had neglected to take into account the 2 strikes on the batter.

FED has not seen fit to differ on the question.

What if there had been less than 2 strikes on the batter?

Spence,

Then my answer would have been correct.

What do you have?
I'll just add the mechanics as my answer matches others.

A & B. Delayed dead ball. Left arm out to indicate I saw the interference.

A. Disregard interference. Answer same as others.

B. With no out, I now call time. "That's interference". Answer same as others.

Waiting on finale

The thread says basic question. The answer to both is in the rule book.

Why make it harder than it really is...........

Agreed on A.

On B, you can either return R1 or get and additional out (on R1) depending on whether you think F2 would have gotten an out on R1 absent the BI.

I think on B...you could have two outs. The strikeout and R3...since the ball sailed into center field...since the hitter struck out you now call the runner out...and you have to return R1 to 3B....the rules allow umpire judgement as to if the runner had the base stolen or not...you can call both out if the catcher would've had a play minus the BI...otherwise, you'd return him to 1B

I keep getting screwed up w/ these FED examples...so...R3 here is a runner on 1B and R1 is a runner on 3B...

So in the first sitch...if the runner is retired, interference is ignored, score that run

Second sitch...batter is out on strikes, if minus the INT, the catcher had a chance to retire the runner, runner is out, return R1 to third base..if no chance for a play...return both runners...no additional out beyond the strikeout.

Unless I'm mistaken, it would be R1 at 3B and R2 and 1B since there are only 2 runners.

It wasn't stated in the OP - simply R1 and R3 - which puts them at 1st and 3rd respectfully (for this discussion at least). I think Tim was simply stating "runners at 1st and 3rd"
