New MLB Umpire's Union Chief

FOX Sports on MSN - MLB - Joe West becomes president of umpires' union

Another notable headline follows,

Will this be in the best interest of MLB?

What an awful choice.

Joe has been making money off his brothers, by making them wear his gear (or a big W on your Power vest, like last night) on TV. And they don't see dollar one of that. Free gear you say? BFD. Plus, they don't see a cent off of the garish Reebok logos on their shoes either.

After seeing all those Toronto fans throwing debris on the field tonight, maybe they should ban it for all games. Game was delayed about 15 minutes while Leyland took his team off the field.

I guess the Toronto fans thought it was a hockey game where anything goes.

Kyle,

Don't blame Joe for a financial decision made by MLB. Wilson & MLB signed an exclusive contract, not Joe.

You're right. I blame whoever was the former union boss. Joe made some good coin off that deal though. Free billboards, and lots of TV time to advertise his goods. The umpires got nothing.

Now they have a shoe deal with Reebok, and can't get individual sponsorships. Oh, and the members don't get compensated for it, aside from free shoes that look like an orca.

Now Joe may be a nice fellow, but he's got to get in the ring for his guys. First step: Who's pocketing the Reebok money?

Simple: MLB. I suspect that is one of the items on the list when WUA & MLB negotiate the next contract.

No hockey fans at the game last night, however the Toronto FC fans were bored and stopped by. Must say they had good arms, for a bunch of soccer fans.
