But I agree that someone like that probably did not deserve a lifetime achievement award.
Also from the Waterbury Republican :

A report given to the judge at Barbero's sentencing said he had engaged in this type of sexual activity for 27 years and he was likely to do it again. Barbero, who served time in prison, retired from umpiring in 1998, two years before his conviction. He is a registered sex offender.

YGBSM.

This type of behavior has the highest rate of recidivism.

Beyond that, the award was for the past, not his "potential" future.

I agree that people can change. Unfortunately pedophiles can't. They can surpress the urges but eventually they will repeat offend. People with records like this do not belong around kids, period.

73% of convicted sex offenders did not reoffend 20 years after release, according to one study: http://www.ps-sp.gc.ca/res/cor/sum/cprs200407_1-en.asp

From another study:
Quote:
Approximately 4,300 child molesters were released from prisons in 15 States in 1994. An estimated 3.3% of these 4,300 were rearrested for another sex crime against a child within 3 years of release from prison.

Sex offenders certainly do re-offend, but the facts do not support your statement that they cannot supress their urges.

Once the word gets out on the street you're a sex offender, it travels pretty fast. Who knows, maybe they did repeat offend. They just don't go around bragging about the fact.
