Mask Pads Question

This is a cross post from umpire org, but I know there are different people on here and wanted their comments.

Ok, it's time to get new pads. Who likes what and why. I'm not to worried about price but I do want something that is good with moisture wicking.

I purchased the Amara suede wraparound pads for my mask, and the very first day I wore them, I got beaned with a direct hit fastball to the lower left side of the mask. Catcher didn't even touch it. The pads absorbed the impact. Without those type of pads, I might have been injured. I believe these wraparound pads are the way to go for those who do not use the hockey style helmet masks.

I also got the Amara suede wraparound pads for my new mask this year, and though they SEEM a bit more bulky than the old pads, I like them very much. For years I used kangaroo pads - they were as smooth as doeskin but didn't wear out every year like the doeskins did. For some reason I can't find the kangaroo pads anymore - which is odd, since there are zillions of kangaroos that the Aussies would LOVE to get out of their fields and gardens...

I use the doeskin. They don't last me long (I go through two pair a year) but they feel the best on my skin and that is all that I care about.

I used to think that way of the doeskin, Toad, but I felt the suedes were more comfortable, especially on days when it got real hot or humid. Suede didn't feel as wet on my face.

I like the Amara IF I've shaved in the last 10 hours or so. With a little stubble the Amara feels grabby and itchy. I've got both, and switch when needed.

My pads

Are soft leather doeskin. Easiest to keep clean and free of sweat.

Saddle soap & rinse for busy weeks keep them supple.
