Missing 1B

Situation: Runners on 3B and 2B - 2 outs.

Batter hits fair ball down 3 base line. Batter ends up on 3rd - both runners score.

I appeal that batter did not touch 1B - field umpire calls him out.

Do both runs score? What if there were only 1 out or no outs?

No runs score on a play where the batter makes the 3rd out before he touches 1st base. So, in your first sitch (2 out), no runs score. With 0 or 1 out, score both.

Umpires don't ask for appeals. What do you mean "I appeal that batter did not touch 1B - field umpire calls him out." ?

He means that he was more than likely a coach or player involved in this play, not an umpire.

If he was the PU and didn't know this rule he shouldn't be the PU. I happen to think that a coach should know this rule too, but that's just my opinion.

Maybe that's why he's asking.

Hmmm - an umpire appealing. Interesting concept.
"Hey coach, I'm appealing your stupid decision to ______ (fill in the blank)"

Umpire: "I'm appealing."

Coach: "I don't find you the least bit appealing."

Which comment would, perchance, be the last before banishment to the nearest parking lot?
