If you do not know what he is talking about then why are you so dismissive?

He is concerned with the differential. It is different among different leagues and ages.

If you are working in a league that has a differential requirement...
oh hell, you are probably right. A t-ball umpire would not need to know this. You were right to begin with.

It's a fair (but specific) question. I'll get the specifics wrong, but in IL JH ball, the rule is something like: if the bat is 33" or more, then -3 applies. If the bat is 31" or 32", then -5 applies. If the bat is 30" or less, then -7 applies. The idea is that the smaller kids need a lighter bat and won't be able to generate the excess speed with it.

Middle school is probably playing under Fed rules which require the bat to have a BESR certification mark if it is not a wood bat.

Talking

I'd call it sarcasm more than tongue in cheek...and i shouldn't run my head since I actually may be calling a machine pitch tournament next month

In 1998 I worked two machine pitch games at the begging of my assignor. they hired 2-man crews and paid $35/game. One worked the machine (pitched) and the other worked the bases. Was told they needed two umpires because of the parents.

Longest evening of my life that I will never get back.

you have not lived..or maybe just died slowly...until you have called a T-Ball ALLSTAR tournament....I would rather call the worst HS teams imaginable than go through that again

Several years ago I was given a "BRONCO" playoff game, which ended up being a "PINTO" (7-8 year olds) playoff game!! Needless to say I was distressed at this occurance, but I perservered and finished the game.

The players were SOOOO small I had to work on one knee, with that shin guard off. I called the whole game with one shin guard removed and I occassionally even played catcher when the little dudes decided it was more fun to daydream.

There is one decided perk for doing this level. On a warm summer day the dress was rather skimpy on the GLM's in the stands. There were plenty of pleasant views in the stands.
