Solo games

I have seen many references to solo games on this forum.
Is it common to work solo games ? For instance I have seen ref to JV games done solo. In my area (NS , Canada)there are no solo games except due to shortages or no shows. Usually the solo games are at the lowest level of Mosquito (10-11 yrs). I am the assigner for my area and know what games are solo or not. Comments ?

My HS Association schedules 1 man games for ALL JV and lower level games even though we have plenty of umpires. It is due to cost and I am in the fairly affluent area of Orange County, California. Suprisingly this is also where brand new umpires start.

When the season gets rolling and there are enough make up games, Fr and JV may wind up with solo umpire. Varsity always has 2 or more. Last year I worked 8 solo games, 7 of them in a 2-week span.

In northern IL, almost all Soph and Frosh baseball games are solo.

In NE OH, Frosh and JV games are nearly always solo.

In Upstate SC, games are only solo in event of a no-show. All JV and varsity games are two-man crews. Softball too. Most youth league as well, above coaches pitch stuff.

In WI, the state (WIAA) rules require 2 umpires at all levels of HS ball (Varsity, JV, Frosh) to start the game. If there is only one umpire, there can be no game.
