Patent Leather looks fine on MaryJanes but not umpire equipment.

Lets see patent leather vs. leather. After 5 minutes on a dusty field can't tell the difference anyways so who cares. I use patent leather easy clean up after the game. A couple of squirts of water and your good to go.
