Example 1. Player hits home run. Ball is dead. Four base award. Runner misses third in his home run trot. Coach sees this, but does nothing. Defense gets new ball and play is made live again. Defense appeals and runner is out.

Example 2. Same as Example 1. except coach grabs runners arm and shoves him back to third therefore robbing defense of a chance to appeal.

You make the call.

Your position makes sense. I answered too quickly before. Dumb coach - should just scream at him to go back and touch without laying a hand on him. Not a pleasant call to make.

Example 2 - see the replay of the McGwire record breaker and what the first base coach did and what was called.

Seen it many times. What if McGwire was halfway to second when David Duncan grabbed him and made him go back and touch 1B? Do you seriously think the Cubs would have appealed a miss of 1B on that play.

Example 3. Doug Eddings gets in the way of Jermaine Dye as he rounds second on a slow roller ground ball to F6. F6 flips back to F4 when Dye collides with Eddings and tags Dye out. What interference did Eddings use to kill the play and allow Dye to stay at second?

I doubt very seriously if any umpire in his right mind, Doug Eddings included, would have seen that piece of coaches interference on that particular four base award.
