Has anybody been to this before? What will I get for $60 and a major flight/road trip? 300 guys in a room and about 10 seconds of time w/ the major league guys?

I spoke with the man organizing this clinic about just that. He told me that last year they had less than a hundred umpires attend the clinic. The classroom work on two man mechanics is run by MiLB guys who donate their time. The field work is run by both MiLB guys and three of the the six MLB umpires I mentioned in the first post. They plan on running six stations with three stations being cage work instruction with one of the MLB guys at each cage. Not a poorly spent $60.00, in my opinion.

I want to go.... no that is wrong, I NEED to go but I am concerned about driving from Southern IN up there, driving back, and then taking the certification test on Monday. Anybody from IN want to carpool (I would be coming from Bloomington, IN)?

I don't have anything against the other camp, but how much are you really going to learn in a 7 hour clinic. In my opinion, if you want to jock sniff the MLB guys, then that's the place for you. But if you really want some serious umpire training including video taped plate work and live base work instruction, then the Doane clinic is your best investment. |
