trouble seeing a low and away pitch

Just recently, I feel like I am having trouble seeing and calling strikes that are low and away in the zone. I only have this problem on left-handed batters. I use a scissor stance. If anyone has any advice on this problem, please reply.

Couple of questions. 1) Where is your head in relation to the catchers? You might be setting up too low. 2) Are you seeing the pitch into the catcher's glove and just having problems with the zone, or are you not seeing the pitch at all?

I had a problem with LH vs. RH batters that was brought to may attention by a few trusted observers. My strike zone for a LH batter was wider than that for a RH batter. I started looking for a reason and I concluded the following:

Most pitchers are right handed. With a right handed batter I'd generally line up with my nose on the inside of the plate, which would give me a view of the pitcher's release point and allow me to track the ball through the strike zone.

With a left handed batter I was lining up a couple inches further inside because a right handed pitcher's release point wasn't blocked by the batter. This allowed me to see the strike zone at a wider angle. The result was that I was widening the zone for a left handed batter.

Realizing that I wasn't setting up in the same relative position for right handed and left handed batters has allowed me to make adjustments and call a consistent zone for batters from both sides.

My advice would be to check your positioning and head location.

Don't expect that your visual field is the same from any position, that is when looking down and away to your left v.s. right. Human sight doesn't work that way many times. It could be a slight mechanical issue but if you are holding your head relatively still, then that might be eliminated.

The first place to start is with an eye exam. This will tell you about straight line visual acuity; you know, the eye chart in front of you. then suggest that your Doc test you for vision deficiencies looking up, down, left, right and combinations.
