Steve, on a varsity game without equipment, I totally agree (and in fact posted a similar example above). And yes, it doesn't matter at varsity what R2 is doing.

The poster, however, was talking about LL, and a game where he knew he was working, so he would be equipped. He was suggesting that maybe he'd work behind the mound in a LL game - a game where they aren't allowed to lead off ... he can't see that runner from there, and having equipment, there's no reason to be working behind the mound. No plusses. Important minuses. Stay behind the catcher.

Mike, I see what you mean now. I guess if pressed into service, you would just have to trust R2 not to leave early.

Actually though, the original poster was talking about a LL Juniors game, where they play regular baseball rules, and R2 can lead off.
