Is Gerry Davis Blind?

Watching the highlights from the Yankees game. R1 stealing, Posada throws down a little to the 1st base side of 2nd. Cano catches and applies the tag on the sliding runner who is a good 2 feet from the bag. Seriously folks, NOT EVEN CLOSE!

Gerry Davis, who is casually walking toward 2nd, turns with the ball (which is about the only thing he did right) and while continuing to move towards second, calls the runner SAFE!

Wow! I have never seen a MLB umpire blow one that badly. Gerry didn't stop moving or set and adjust to make the call. When he sees that on replay, he's not going to feel too good. And of course, that runner scores a minute later on a bloop single.

Now I know why you guys preach that turn and set, adjust to the play, proper angle, etc.

At any rate it seems that I am wiser than he is to this small extent, that I do not think that I know what I do not know. ~Socrates

Gerry is not blind, just human.

Gerry Davis exhibited a perfect depiction of not being in the correct position. He was straight-lined and probably thought he was correct. I'm sure he knew differently when he got back to the clubhouse and viewed the video.

I hear that Gerry Davis Sports is offering a 10% discount this week to anyone/everyone personally offended by his call.

if you're ever feeling down about a game, just look at this play and remember that they miss 'em in the bigs too!

I was a band director for a number of years and I still adjudicate music festivals and parades. A phenomenon that occurs with the better bands is that their errors stand out more than some of the lesser quality bands. This is because of what we refer to as the frequency and density of the errors. When a band is very, very good, errors are infrequent and isolated and out of character with the rest of the performance, thus they stand out.

I believe something similar occurs when a Major League umpire makes a gross miss as Gerry Davis did. If this was something that occurred frequently it wouldn't have garnered the notice it has.
