No West....

interesting...

he made 2 controversial calls last year in the NYY LAA series, wonder if this played a part in it... probably not.

Just odd he wouldn't be in there, no?

Not to play the "XXX should have made it over YYY" game, but how do 3 umpires (West, Nelson, Hernandez) go from WS assignments to none? Just seems odd.

As for the Angel thing... well...

he's not an MLB umpire, and should not be on the game's greatest stage.

I thought that the MLB playoff assignments were done on a rotation basis and not on merit, I could be wrong. If it was done on merit we would see the same "really good" umpire working the WS every year.

You thought wrong. Done on merit, with the above cited rules (no back-to-back playoff rounds; no back-to-back world series). According to a (SF) Bay Area newspaper story printed on-line yesterday, MLB has 7 supervisors meet toward the end of the season to review each umpire's body of work for the season (quest-tec; handling situations; rules knowledge; pace of game; etc.) and then make the post-season selections.

You say that last part like it's a bad thing.

That's my favorite crew for the opening round.

I know it's early, but....if I had to pick a WS crew based on the DS umpires, they would come from this group:

McClelland (cc), Marquez, Everitt, Rapuano, Winters, Barrett, Bell, Davis

Vanover's missed a couple tonight in Detroit. The Rodriguez play at third was close, but sure looked like ARod tagged him before Pudge got to the bag. The tag was high and maybe that influenced the call. Also called a ball down the line foul after white paint clearly flew up. Not his call, I think, but he had to give help and didn't have it.
