The obligatory 4th out...
Saw this over the weekend...
2 outs R1 on 1st base Batter strikes out, runner steals 2nd. Next batter comes up, singles in R1. Next batter grounds out to 1b for the 4th out. Umpires do not realize this until between innings. What is the appropriate appeal for this? |

Where was this game played, the "twilight zone"? Apparently there was only 1 out when the batter struck out, or someone would have said something, right (sarcasm, lest anyone get their knickers in a knot)?
I don't see changing anything on this....everyone gets what they deserve for sleeping at the switch. As they say "you snooze, you lose". Bob P.

What would you like to happen ? If D-coach didn't say anything, then it is "Play on, McDuff". If coach says something, confer with partner and official scorer, and if you determine you erred, take the run off and start with the batter who singled as the first batter of next inning. Doug |

So who the heck was the official scorer? Who was keeping the book in each of the dugouts?
If you are playing defense, and you can't keep track of 3 simple outs, maybe you deserve to be scored on. Let em' PLAY!

Just a lurker in the baseball side of things.
I'm rather disappointed in this interp that an error cannot be fixed. Reversing the error seems to have no impact on any strategical decisions made by a team. What is the rationale for allowing a run to be counted after the opponents properly earned 3 outs?

Actually, this is a correctable error. My point was only that the blame for this kind of error should not be assigned to the umps.
I'd get the two coaches together, with both books, find out when the third out was made, cancel all runs and plays after that, then continue with the game. We're not only out there to call the game, but to make the game is called fairly!

Maybe my point was lost in sarcasm.
If the umpires are in agreement that there was ONE out, and no one said anything, not the score keepers, the coaches, the fan's, Aunt Mabel at the hot dog stand, then maybe there was only ONE out!!! Now, between innings the umpires are shooting the breeze at the backstop. One says to the other.."Hey Smitty, I think we really had 2 outs before the strike out last inning". And the other says, " You know Charlie, I think you're right!!". Now you are saying they should cancel the run and correct the "error" that no one else seemed to catch? Bob P.

1. If anyone from either team mentions it, before the first pitch of the next inning, I want to get it right. That's our duty. If they can show me that there were 3 outs, then we accept it and cancel the runs. If nobody catches it...I was never wrong to begin with...eh? 2. Just so you know, my partner and I NEVER get together between innings at the backstop. It's usually at the concession window, or near the babe sitting near 3rd base!
