Well, because he's 16 and who knows what he'll want to do next year. I figure it'll be worth the $35.00 even if he tears it up in a couple of years on the small diamond rather than spend $100.00 on a protector he might not use if he doesn't move up.

vs Broken Clavicle/Sternum/Rib(s) There are reasons why some equipment costs less. I bought a $40.00 helmet for my granddaughter when my wife bought her a bicycle. Protect those that don't know what real pain is, that's your job, Dad. You can always sell the gear to another. or...'a penny wise'...

You can get a hard shell for a few bucks more.
http://www.lestersupstatesports.com/...tegory_Code=CH I know a couple of umpires that have this protector and it works well for lower levels of 90 foot.
