Appeal after dead ball, runner returns
R2, B1 hits fly to right, which is caught and R2 obviously leaves early. RF airmails the throw over the 3Bs head, over the fence and into DBT, R2 scores.
Obviously, the ball is now dead and nothing can happen. R2 realizes they are going to appeal his leaving early once the ball is in play and after crossing home (but before getting to the dugout), he proceeds to return to 2B. While there's a dead ball, can the runner do this, even if he retouched home and 3rd? The defense hasn't had a chance to appeal because the ball is dead. If R2 shouldn't be allowed to return to 2nd during a dead ball, how can this be prevented? |

Its prevented by the rules. In FED 8-6(d), (no OBR ref in front of me, sorry) a runner may not return to correct his baserunning error if he has advanced a base beyond his missed base/departed base and the ball becomes dead.
In your sitch he will be out as soon as the ball becomes live again and the defense appeals. Since you don't discuss a dead-ball appeal, I assume you are not talking FED here. |

In OBR, the runner can't legally return if he advances and touches the next base after the ball becomes dead. So, if R2 had not yet reached third before the ball became dead, he couldn't return once he touched third. If R2 was between third and home when the ball became dead, he couldn't return once he touched home. If (in some TWP), R2 was already past home when the ball became dead, he could return to second (touching home and third on the way) and then complete the award (touching third and home).
