Its prevented by the rules. In FED 8-6(d), (no OBR ref in front of me, sorry) a runner may not return to correct his baserunning error if he has advanced a base beyond his missed base/departed base and the ball becomes dead.

In your sitch he will be out as soon as the ball becomes live again and the defense appeals. Since you don't discuss a dead-ball appeal, I assume you are not talking FED here.
