Someone with the self-delusional name of Mr. Umpire (grin) posted in a thread since locked: "What's a Carl's Clinic? Anything like Evans's Florida Classic or Gerry Davis's camps or Little League's WR Umpire School? Who are the instructors?"

No, a Carl clinic is not "like" Evans' or Davis' clinics. The Carl clinic is designed specifically for the target umpires. In North Carolina and Iowa, my clinic was for JUCO and high school umpires. In Wyoming, the audience was 18 Babe Ruth umpires. In Mexico, it was for semi-pro and low-level pro umpires. In all those clinics I went to the mountain. (another grin)

In McAllen, the one Chad attended, the clinic was for USSSA umpires for leagues ranging from 18u to 9u. The 5-day camp was attended by 33 umpires representing 9 cities -- not counting La Grange, Indiana.

I imagine even Mr. Umpire would benefit from attending a Carl clinic. I know I do.

Ok: Sponsors for the clinic were: Rio Grande Valley Sports Academy, McAllen Boys and Girls Club, Dr. Pena's Eye Institute -- yep, he got a kick out of that --, Wendy's, Coca Cola Bottling (those two for lunch on Saturday), Rio Grande Valley Chapter of TASO, and the Rising Star Basball School.

Two additional sponsors: Gerry Davis awarded a certificate for chest protector, shin guards, and mask to the candidate picked best among the "true" rookies. (The clinicians had 10 to choose from!) Right Sports, the parent company of my magazine and this forum, gave several books, T-Shirts, and ballpoint pens as raffle prizes. Dr. Pena also provided custom t-shirts for the clinicians and attendees.

The camp spread over five days: Our schedule was 3 evening sessions (7-10 pm), 8:00 to 5:30 pm on Saturday, and Sunday (8:00 to 2:00).

We used live pitchers and catchers (and a batter who was forbidden to swing - grin) for plate work. A fielder and first baseman (and runners) for plays at first; a fielder and second baseman (and runners) for plays and simlulated steals of second. Wendy's provided lunch for all the players as well.

We video taped all drills. At 33 frames per second. (grin)

We calculated that building classroom use fees, field fees, clinician fees (there were three: plate, first, second), t-shirts, lunch, and clinic manuals (83-page spiral bound with color cover - another donation from Dr. Pena) brought the cost per student to about $140 per man. (No women applied and since we're a depressed county, prices are generally far below the state average.)

Because of the extensive sponsor involvement, registration fee was a minimal $25.

There's another planned for January. Yes, we're going head to head with Jimmy Evans. (another grin) Of course, we'll do a repeat in July of the one Chad attended.

May we save you a spot?

Actually, that sounds well organized and sounds like it would be a lot of fun.

I'd come, but my expectant wife (due January 27th) might object. Although I think I may have a HS basketball game scheduled on her due date.

I agree with you. I was an officer in our local baseball association and was required to attend the Texas State meeting. For 18 of those years I was in Dallas/Houston, et.al, on 14 of our Wedding Anniversaries.

In your case, how can a baby compete with a double foul?

Or a blarge!

Who were are clinicians? With 33 attendees I would guess there would be at least four.
Well, I mentioned in the post there were three clinicians: one for the plate, one for first, and one for second. I don't think the names of the clinicians, other than mine, are important since they are local, not national. Believe me, they know what they're doing in baseball up through D1.

Incidentally: your baby is due on a very lucky day. My wife and I were married January 27, 1961. [/B][/QUOTE]

Have clinic, will travel.

It just hits me that most of the guys/gals reading this don't remember the television show starring Richard Boone and called "something" like the comment I made.

Oh, well. Sigh.

Email me and I'll give you more particulars.

His name was Palladin (sp) - his card (yes, he had a card) read "have gun, will travel". Based in San Fransisco, I think. Always wore black, but he was the good guy, always gunslinging for someone who was being oppressed. Had a black horse and a black saddle, with a lot of silver on it. There was a song with the show that I can't remember the words of, but it ended something like ... man with a gun.

There will be lots of folks here that don't remember this show, or even who Richard Boone was. How about that line in the movie with John Wayne, Big Jake, was it? After getting shot up by Big Jake he said "Who are you?" and after Jake said something like "I'm Jacob McCandles", Richard said "I thought you was dead".

That show with Palladin, and Gunsmoke, were my favorites. Anybody here remember Chester?

"Have Gun Will Travel" reads the card of a man.
A knight without armor in a savage land.
His fast gun for hire heed's the calling wind.
A soldier of fotune is the man called Paladin.

Paladin, Paladin Where do you roam?
Paladin, Paladin, Far, far from home.

He travels on to wherever he must;
A chess knight of silver is his badge of trust.
There are campfire legends that the plainsmen spin
Of the man with the gun,
of the man called Pa-l-l-l-l-a-din
