One week in. . .
Well, I just finished working my first week of high school volleyball. I did 3 JV/V double-headers. Honestly, it wasn't very fun. It just wasn't all that interesting. The easy stuff (legal hits, in or out) is pretty easy; and the hard stuff (rotations and overlaps) is impossible.
I'm not ready to quit, but I don't see myself doing this long-term unless there's some way to dramatically improve my ability to "officiate" the positioning. Otherwise, all I'm doing as the down official is administering subs and watching for net violations. |

Don't feel bad, learning to recognize illegal alignments takes a while. Depending on how many matches you work, it might take a season or two before you're reasonably comfortable with it.

Here's the thing with IA. You don't see it. : Then you do. Then you don't. Then you do. It really takes a long time, and truthfully a lot of times I have to look very hard and with some teams unique positionoing its hard to see. I always have to get back adjusted at the first of each season. Remember when you were first calling block/charge or travel/not travel? As I have said before, though, for those of us who obviously did not play and those who did not coach, it's a different world at first. Don't give up yet Scrappy. But time will tell if you like it or not. RR
