If F6 does throw to first, you are only going to get one or two steps, but you are already at a crappy angle and getting closer to the play doesn't really help. By waiting, you allow yourself the opportunity to get a decent look and angle if R1 takes off for third and the throw goes there. Since third base is a lot closer to home than first base, it's a higher priority to make sure we can get a good look at any play there.
