Wasn't a determining factor but certainly set the tone for the game in the first inning. Quite possibly the worst piece of officiating I've ever seen. THREE umpires for the 16U Consolation final at Compuware yesterday. Runners on first and second. Ball hit down the third base line. Fielded directly in front of the bag, third base turns, takes two steps, touches the bag for the force out, checks the runners at second and first and throws back to the pitcher. Home umpire signals fair on the hit, lets the play run out (third base coach yells foul). Neither field ump, including the one standing directly behind third makes a call, either out or safe. Knowing his runner is out by 15 steps, third base coach continues to argue that the ball was foul and tries to send his runner back to second.

There is no argument, coach shuts up or sits down. Since the PU should stay with the ball, he should just make the call @ 3B and not give the moron on the line the opportunity to look like more of an idiot.

16U ASA Qualifier this weekend. Two clarifications requested.

1) Two strikes on a "Slapper". Next pitch, slides her left hand up the bat in a typical bunting position and tries a running bunt (no swing, no wrist break, flat still bat).

Ball goes foul. Umps seem totally perplexed at our argument that it was a third strike out on a bunt. After a discussion, they claim that she was "slapping" so it was a standard foul ball. The same two umps then made the same no-call in our favor the following game which equally exasperated the opposing coaches. A bunt is a bunt is a bunt regardless of whether the batter is moving, correct?

2) Runner on second. Batter hits a blooper to right who makes a throw home. First baseman is standing on first base and gets run into by the batter trying to round for second. Both almost wind up on the ground, runner regains her footing, continues to second. Ball is thrown to second where the runner is punched out on a questionable call. We argue obstruction on the first baseman which again seems to totally confuse the ump (same ump from previous question, different game). She confers with the home ump and the out stands because the runner had the opportunity to return to first after the collision. ???

That comment now makes this a rule misinterpretation and protestable.
