using modern technology on the field

I was just musing about a few things today. I wonder why in this day and age of iPads and such that it is still illegal for a base coach to use electronic devices to keep score, track substitutes and such. If there was a reason, I forgot.
Might the day come when the home plate umpire has a little electronic gadget that downloads batting orders and is used to keep track of subs, conferences, etc. Paper and pencil seems so 1890-ish.
Any thoughts on this?

The original reason was to prevent any sort of improper recording of the game or stealing signs. An electronic score book is still legal. However, nothing that could record should be allowed. No phones or anything else that could be used to communicate are permitted either.

I seem to remember a conversation we had along these lines when the IPad first came out a few years ago.....

I will see if I can find that thread. Seems to me it was started by our main technology geek, NCASAUmp.....

Here it is: Electronic Equipment on Field (ASA)

Me? A geek?

I fear technology and avoid it at all costs.

This is true, his jeep is actually run by 1000's of mice under the hood. Most games he arrives by horseback.

It would be nice to have mandatory RFID tags sewn into uniforms so when the next batter comes into the box, they can get a scan on the way in and any BOO possibilities get Barney Fife'd
