ASA Tag-Up Responsibilities

Where'd they go??

In 2010, they were on page 255 in the Umpire Manual. I don't have my 2011 book with me, but I believe it was in the same general area that year, too.

This year, that section appears to be gone. Am I missing something?

Screw green, it ain't easy being blue!

I won't be coming here that much anymore. I might check in now and again.

I think they have them in the individual scenarios this year. For example on page 258 in the section Runner on First Base Only-Fast Pitch, under base umpire responsibilities it states "Responsible for the tag up at 1B...."

I believe they have these listed in each situation now.

You're correct. However, on page 266 (two umpire - slow pitch), the wording is very confusing for "Runner on 2B only, 1B & 2B, 2B & 3B or bases loaded."

Quote:
B - ...Responsible for the tag up at 1B and/or 2B, any play at 1B or 2B and the last runner to third base.
In years past, tag-up responsibilities were as follows:
PU always has the runner at 3rd.
BU always has the runner at 1st.
BU always has the lone runner at 2nd.
With multiple runners, PU always has the lead runner, and the BU has all the rest.

While I've no doubt that the mechanics have not changed, the wording in the above quote does not clearly label the responsibilities. One could misinterpret the "and/or 2B" to mean that responsibilities could flip-flop.

Yeah I see what you mean, could be confusing with runners on 1B &2B, Pu has 2B and BU has 1B tagups. That could be confusing to some with the and/or statement.

Agreed. I've passed it on to my UIC.

It sounds like ASA is re-arraging the umpire manual to be consistent with the DVD's....

I can just hear KR's voice saying this.....

And I just totally read that in KR's voice...

It's not bad that the two should be consistent, but the wording needs a LOT of work. The funny thing is that the two-umpire fast pitch section is much, much clearer, and the tag-up assignments are exactly the same. So why didn't they make the same effort in the slow pitch side?

I verified yesterday that the tag-up assignments were on page 260 in the 2011 book, IIRC.
