Sadly, I won't be there. After calling ASA Nationals on my wife's birthday the last two years in a row, I opted not to go this year.

Screw green, it ain't easy being blue!

I won't be coming here that much anymore. I might check in now and again.

How rude of her to celebrate a birthday during softball season!

OTOH, I don't know why people think birthdays are so special, you have one every year and the more you have, the more depressed some people get.

But then there is Hallmark and American Greetings to help you along.......for a price.

Well, that's just proof that I picked a good one! Or maybe that a good one picked me.

She knows how much softball means to me, and she knows that I may not always get these offers. Now that I'm NIF-qualified, I can afford to hold back and not take a National assignment.

Plus, on one of those birthdays, she did go to Boston for a conference and some sightseeing. She loved it.

And you know, it's funny you should mention the birthday depressions. When I was in college, I took Norwegian for a year to pay my respects to my grandfather. It didn't hurt that the instructor from Lithuania was drop-dead gorgeous. One day, we come walking into class, and she's visibly bummed out.

"Laura, hva skjedde? (Laura, what happened?)"

"It's my birthday..."

"Really? Wow! Happy birthday!"

"No, it's not good..."

"Why not? How old are you?" (many of us were dying to know this)

"I'm an old maid!"

"What're you talking about? C'mon, tell us."

"I'm... I'm 22."

Apparently, in Lithuania, if you're not married by age 20, there's something wrong with you.

Trust me. There was NOTHING wrong with her.

Whose? My wife's, or the Norwegian instructor's?

Of course I'm celebrating my wife's, and mine is almost two weeks after hers. Funny thing is, I know 4 other people with the same exact birthday, all of which are women (one is a cousin of mine).

My money is on him asking about the Norwegian instructor; if you weren't (at least occasionally) celebrating your wife's birthday, you would be calling her your ex-, I believe.

Ahhh... Well, there are a number of us from that class who still keep in touch. And yes, she's one of them.

AT&T thanks you - "Reach out and touch someone."

I always preferred: reach out and taunt someone.

Wouldn't it have been easier to send a card?

But back to your wife. What time of year would she have played ball when she was growing up?

I've met Dave's wife. Quite possibly, her season was different than ours since it was in a different hemisphere.

True, but it wouldn't have meant as much. My grandfather was actually quite an inspirational person who gave so much to the community during his lifetime. Truly a wonderful person, and I wanted to show him just what he meant to me. So, I learned our heritage's language.

BretMan's right... She's not exactly "local."

Born and raised in Argentina.

I have called many a tournament across my oldest daughter's birthday........early August.........she has always been cool with it........good daughters are hard to find......

I missed having her here this year. I moved her to AZ last year........maybe next year I can go back for her BD.......but it is frickin hot there........although, we just passed 40 days of over 100 for the summer.......It reached 107 under my carport on Sunday.......I was welding a ramp for a utility trailer and started getting light headed.........

Decided it was time to cool off and just sit down and drink a beer........I have not finished that ramp yet......but have finished quite a few beers since then.

We are only supposed to get to 98 or so today and maybe cooler tomorrow. Soon.......maybe.......

Joel
