Here's a couple questions maybe someone can help with that I'm still not quite sure of. #1 R1 and R2 are on 2nd and first base respectively, with no outs.B3 hits a high pop foul between home and 1st base,F3 with ordinary effort loses sight of the ball because of the sun.The ball lands on foul ground and without being touched rolls into fair territory halfway between home and first base. What is your ruling? A.foul ball B.fairball,no one out C.fair ball,B3 out.D.fairballR1 out. #2R1 is on 2nd base and R2 is on 1st base.A fly ball is hit deep in the outfield.R1 advances legally, but R2 leaves the base before the ball is caught or touched and is on 2nd base. The ball is thrown to the pitcher in the circle. No one has requested time and the pitcher throws to 2nd base for a live appeal.R1 advances toward home. What is your ruling?A.R1's advance is illegal and she is returned to 3rd base.R2 is declared out.B.R1's advance is legal and R2 is declared out.C.R2 is declared safe since ball has gone back to the pitcher. Thanks in advance for any help.

-------------- "Infield Fly, batter is out if fair." Ball is fair, therefore batter is out; other runners can advance at their risk. +++++++++++++++ #2R1 is on 2nd base and R2 is on 1st base.A fly ball is hit deep in the outfield.R1 advances legally, but R2 leaves the base before the ball is caught or touched and is on 2nd base. ------------ Dumb move by pitcher. She should look R1 back to 3B, request time, then appeal. Of course if R2 breaks back to 1st then F1 has to play on her and risk R1 going home. Anyway - your question: live ball appeal, F4/F5 must tag R2 on 2B for appeal; R2 is out, R1's run scores. With respect to answer C - appeal is still legal until next pitch. WMB |

On West Mich's answer, I agree with the end result but I have to disagree with part of his response. The runner (R2) would not have to be tagged to be out. She would be out by the defensive player simply touching the base. This is in a "live ball" appeal situation. A runner leaving a base before the catch can be put out on a "live ball" appeal by the defensive player touching the base and not be reguired to tag the runner........

Take another look at the original question, Buck
It is defined as NFHS game, and it was R2 leaving FIRST base too soon. A proper NFHS appeal requires tagging the base that was missed or left too soon, OR tagging the runner if she is still on the playing field. (2003 Rules book, pg 80 Appeals Procedures)
If I were the pitcher I would have thrown to 1B because (a)it is easier to tag a base than a runner that may suddenly take evasive action, and (2) it's a shorter throw if R1 decides to go home. WMB |
