Just curious- Does anyone remember why or when Little League went to metal bats? Maybe a result of injuries from broken bats? When I played in the 70's, it was all pine....whether swinging or sitting.

1971: The aluminum baseball bat is first used. It was partly developed by Little League Baseball.

If wikepedia is accurate.

Hickory for the bats. Pine for the butts. There were also ash and maple bats, if you wanted to spend the money.

Funny, the stuff I swung was ash. The stuff I sat on was usually aluminum.
