blown call and what would you do

fed sistrict finals playoff game.

r1 on 3rd and r2 on 2nd. batter hits slow roller to 1b who fields it and move to tag batter runner moving to 1st. BR stops and starts back.

home plate ump signals runs scores. the bad part of all this is the pu teaches this scenario in clinics.

What would you do if you were the 3U and saw the retreat and no one came up with dead ball,....?

The run scoring tied the game. there were 3 umps on third base side and fans and an 18U coach wondering wtf. It was not a good night for our association.

Ask the PU if sure R1 crossed before the INT.

I would wonder WTF if there were 3 umpires on the 3B side of the field, too!

Why would PU signal the run scored unless there was a dead ball? Or did he do so because the fielder eventually made a tag?

Is there any reason in Fed that 3U can't call it? If not, make the call!

I've always been told that obstruction and interference can be (and should be) called by any umpire who sees it.

Also - any umpire is expected to correct an incorrect rule interpretation. If no call was made, I'd get together with my partners and ask what PU saw - perhaps he DIDN'T see the batter back up!

In any case, if PU insists he's right - you don't want to get into an argument on the field. If no one protests, I guess you move on, and discuss it afterward.

Was there no protest? At this level I would have expected one.

Why would the PU signal run scores unless there were two outs?

Was there a "chat" between the PU and DC regarding this play?

Yes, I assumed it was not because you did not mention it in the OP.
My intent was to bring it into a PU/BU conversation as a reminder. Probably not a good idea to say what I suggested as it questions judgement. BUt some way of initiating talk is needed, adn I was going for an indirect face saver.

Blown call? Hell, yeah. But, if the defense isn't smart enough to question it, no way am I making that call after the fact, or suggesting to my PU that the run doesn't score until and unless asked. The remedy is in the hands of the defense; challenge the ruling and force the crew together, or else protest if plate umpire won't even ask the crew.

Or, not until our postgame, if we never get together.

The need for the coaches to understand the rules AND to understand their role in correcting mistakes, oversights, etc., is many times overlooked.

that makes sense Mike then i thought about it why would it make sense as there was 1 out and with two outs no run would score as br would have been the 3rd out.

anyone have a intro to ask the person what happened as it was our UIC.

no chat. I guess he did not know that was a dead ball. The vienna stars coach sure did and said he was going to ask her about it after the game but he did not.

and now i know what you meant.

where were you? they could have used you.

So, there were a few more than 3 umpires on the 3B side

I gave my availability to NV and BROA back in early April and was assigned games from BROA through June 7th. When I wasn't scheduled for college games I worked for BROA. I would be surprised if my game count for NV totaled more than five.

Except for rain cancelations, I've worked just about every day.

As far as approaching the PU/Association UIC, I've got no intro for you other than perhaps sending a candy gram with a note.
