Well, maybe that back pocket flappin' out there in the breeze could be a likely target for a swipe tag and an out.

Of course, that would probably lead to another NCAA rule, if it went against someone with any pull.

I'm I imagining correctly that you've told a coach on occasion, "Sure she tagged her; got her right on the improperly untucked shirttail."

Actually, the derivation of the rule came about because a glove was hanging out of the back pocket and became dislodged during a slide. The play continued and at a later point in the play, the ball came into contact with the dislodged glove and the blocked ball argument began.
Yes, the rule is reactionary, what can we do when the coaches are in charge of making and changing rules.

I agree, Mike. The question came down to properly worn equipment. Which is also why NCAA specifically states that sunglasses are considered properly worn both over the eyes and on the brim of the hat (for those intermittent cloudy days).

Of all the things a player could discard or lose on the field that could affect the path of a thrown ball, its going to be the helmet.

"The values of softball competition are based on good sporting behavior and fair play. The following are examples, although not limited to, of unsporting behavior: A. Uniforms not worn properly, such as jerseys not tucked in, sleeves rolled under, and caps worn backwards...." [Umpire Manual at p.134]
