R1 on 3rd. B1 has 2 strikes with 2 outs in the inning. Dropped strike 3 goes to the screen. R1 sprints home and safely touches the plate. B1 has backed away from the plate to avoid interfering. B1 and R1 then turn and enter the dugout. B1 called out for entering the team area for out #3. Does the run score?

You can apply one overriding rule regarding the third out of an inning. This rule is in every softball (and baseball) code, even that of the Yemeni Slayer-of-the-Infidel Softball Federation.

Did B1 reach first base safely after becoming a batter-runner?

steve, help the OP out a little, and just answer the OP's question. the OP has 4 post history. this isn't a ball field you are umpiring. you are allowed to coach on a forum, and even be a little human and explain it. OP has come here to ask for help.

OP, no run can score if a BR does not reach 1B for the third out, whether batted or awarded. they gotta run it and touch 1B, or else it's as if they got put out before reaching the first base bag.

the NFHS rule is 9-1-1a
"A run is not scored if the runner advances to home plate during action in which the third out is made as follows: (a) by the batter-runner before touching first base.

ASA rule is similar, but I have an old rulebook, rule 5-5-B-1.

Steve was helping the OP here. Like a lot of veterans here will do, Steve is hinting at what rule the OP needs to look at in order to make a decision.

Whenever someone comes on here with a question, one option is to just give an answer. That's all fine and good. Another is to encourage someone to get into the rulebook and learn the rules and what they mean. Developing this habit is essential for an umpire, so Steve actually was giving the OP the help he/she was asking for.

it just didn't seem that way from reading it initially. if that's the way it's usually handled here, I can dig it.

but at some point tho, someone has to answer point blank, else it will seem very hostile or exclusive in here for those seeking answers.
