Errrrrrr.........Ahhhhhhhhhhh...........

Mike........

Would you tell a Retired Military guy like glen to NOT have shiney shoes??.........grin

I will say this about glen's shoes...........I am damn glad I have my sunglasses on when I am in his presence.........

BUT.......to say that shiney shoes projects a "look at me" image..........I say "horse hockey" (to quote Colonel Potter)..........

If we cannot strive to look our best.......crud

I have my pants pressed, shirts starched (not any more with the micro mesh).......New (or at least very good) hats.......etc......

I (and I am sure glen) am sorry that my creased pants and/or shined shoes upset another umpire...........

As I have said a bazillion times before (I don't know why I shine my shoes before games........after 2 minutes they are dusty and my shine job is gone).......but I do it anyway......

If you need shades for shoes, you're probably right.

Whoa, buckeroo, you are reading much more than what I posted.

If a person is really military, s/he wouldn't need the Leather Lustre, but would shine their shoes the old fashion way with spit and polish.

Personally, I don't care what you do, I just noted that I have seen and heard how others may feel about it. And, like you said, by the time the first play is over, your shoes are dirty. If you read my post, you will see my concern was more about the welfare of the umpire's feet and the leather uppers.

Nor did I mention anything about not having a crease in the pants. Then there is the military crease in the old Elbeco shirts. My problem was finding a cleaners who had someone who knew what it was

My hats (took five to a 3-day tournament last month) are always blocked and in a sealable plastic bag as are my three fully-stocked ball bags.

BTW, I believe there is a huge difference between a shoe than shines and one with a reflective surface.

Cool Just to let you know

I made it through and still alive. Had a great time, got to call 8 games. We had 83 teams, furthest team from Alaska, most interesting team called Nudies from Minnosota which were from a nudist colony from outside of St. Paul and yes they did play with uniform on (Thank goodness). 7 of the 8 games went smooth as silk, the last one was a little bumpy the losing team that went home didnt like a couple of the calls that didnt go there way and decided loudly to vocal their opinions but overall it was great fun. We had 54 umps and got a chance to meet and talk with a lot of very professional umps that had a lot of experience that were great to work with and learn from.

A couple other notes for now. They treated us well, each of us umps got single rooms that had their own kitchen and everything else that you could possibly need. Another interesting incident happen from a team from Montana which was behind going into the 7th as the team was entering the dugout getting ready for their last at bats one of their wifes decided to lift her shirt to flash the ballplayers as they were coming in. It didnt help but thought it brought a whole new meaning to rally caps

Anyway thanks for all the help and I sure did enjoy my 1st experience at this level but I am very sore and tired for now.

Fifty-four umpires for eighty-three teams? Sounds like you were a little overstaffed. Was Enron or Worldcom a sponsor?

Well, glad you had a good time.

Wink

No, I think it was actually Arthur Anderson accounting firm that figured that one out. Actually though it worked out good we have 9 ballfield at the facility so it worked out 1 on then 1 off for most of the tournament which myself I liked. I know some umpires probably would of liked to called more games for their time but this way umps were fresh and I believe better by not being so tired which I have seen in a lot of local type tournaments
