Would you tell a Retired Military guy like glen to NOT have shiney shoes??.........grin
I will say this about glen's shoes...........I am damn glad I have my sunglasses on when I am in his presence.........
BUT.......to say that shiney shoes projects a "look at me" image..........I say "horse hockey" (to quote Colonel Potter)..........
If we cannot strive to look our best.......crud
I have my pants pressed, shirts starched (not any more with the micro mesh).......New (or at least very good) hats.......etc......
I (and I am sure glen) am sorry that my creased pants and/or shined shoes upset another umpire...........
As I have said a bazillion times before (I don't know why I shine my shoes before games........after 2 minutes they are dusty and my shine job is gone).......but I do it anyway......

Whoa, buckeroo, you are reading much more than what I posted.
If a person is really military, s/he wouldn't need the Leather Lustre, but would shine their shoes the old fashion way with spit and polish.
Personally, I don't care what you do, I just noted that I have seen and heard how others may feel about it. And, like you said, by the time the first play is over, your shoes are dirty. If you read my post, you will see my concern was more about the welfare of the umpire's feet and the leather uppers.
Nor did I mention anything about not having a crease in the pants. Then there is the military crease in the old Elbeco shirts. My problem was finding a cleaners who had someone who knew what it was
My hats (took five to a 3-day tournament last month) are always blocked and in a sealable plastic bag as are my three fully-stocked ball bags.
BTW, I believe there is a huge difference between a shoe than shines and one with a reflective surface.
