Detached Equipment on a Foul Fly

Sitting around, in near post NFHS season, this one was discussed:

No outs; no one on; not that it matters. B1 hits a fly that is obviously foul, near the fence. F3, just being silly, catches the ball in her hat.

8-4-3 would not apply because it's not a fair ball; no three base award. But, it's not a catch, yet, since the ball is not held in hand or glove. When the ball is pulled out of the hat and is then held securly in the hand, is it a catch at that point?

I think it is not, but what rule makes it so?

2-9-ART. 5 . . . A catch shall not be credited if:
a. A fielder catches a batted, pitched or thrown ball with anything other than
her hand(s) or glove/mitt in its proper place.

Wink Now Wait a Minute

Do you mean that catch Dale made of the HR ball with his hat as he reached over the fence on "King of the Hill" wasn't a catch?

Actually I have seen it on several shows and movies where some player catches the ball with their hat.

Have you seen blatant ignorance of the rules when softball is depicted in TV or movies? If so, what have you seen? Include other sports if you have seen it (especially baseball).

You mean the part in A League of Their Own where Madonna catches the ball in her cap? Yes. I know it's baseball, but I haven't seen many softball movies.

There's also a part where Tom Hanks and Geena Davis are arguing over signals and the batter clearly takes more than 10 seconds.

I think the audience should be grateful it was a cap with which she caught the ball.

I haven't decided if I should call it from the dugout or the outfield. Apparently, both have really great views!

Screw green, it ain't easy being blue!

I won't be coming here that much anymore. I might check in now and again.
